Construction glossary term

General Contractor

A general contractor is an individual or company responsible for managing the overall process of a residential construction project. This includes overseeing all contractual agreements, arranging for materials and subcontractors, managing the budget, ensuring quality control, and meeting deadlines. A general contractor may also provide design services and help with decision making related to architectural style and material selection.

General contractors are responsible for coordinating the entire project from start to finish, guiding it through all stages from pre-construction through completion. They may also be involved in obtaining permits, scheduling inspections, resolving code violations and other related tasks. The general contractor will also review contracts regarding insurance coverage for various subcontractors and suppliers and ensure that safety requirements are met onsite at all times.
